PSDI Election '08 - '09

Posted on Thursday the 31st of July 2008

by: Dr. Lorina Villanueva

Last July 25, 2008, the PSD held its election of the new set of the Board of Trustees for school year 2008-2009. Mr. Edgar V. Bondoc, a parent member, was re-elected for another 2-year term together with Atty. Daisy G. Tingzon, a new parent candidate, who will also serve for a 2-year term.

Mrs. Ruby Socorro D. Santander, the former non-parent representative, made it again and Mrs. Ma. Vinnah D. Hernandez is still our teacher-member representative.

Before the election proper, the outgoing/nominee Chairman of the Board, Mr. Edgar V. Bondoc, Mr. Alexander S. Acosta, our Principal, Mr. Gerardo Macasa, former treasurer, made their accomplishment reports of the previous school year 2007-2008.

Though tough because of the transferring process in the new PSD, they said, “with the 35% increase in the enrolment this school year,” PSD is getting a better edge over other expatriate schools in academic and in co-curricular activities.

To them, PSD is in good hands.

by: Elena D. Castro

Elocutors David Jess Ecal and Ma.Katrina Pastrana shared the first place as the judges could not break the tie between them in the recently concluded Elocution, Essay and Painting competition of the Anti Smoking Society of Qatar, held at the Ideal Indian School on June 24-25.

Some six others emerged runners-up and special awardees in the elocution and painting contests. They are as follows: Abigail Medalle, second place; Melissah Mota, special award, Jameela Joy Reyes, second place, and Sherald Mae Sanchez, third place. Meanwhile, Joseph Claud Marquez and Ian Russel Escala won fourth and fifth place, respectively in the on-the-spot painting contest.

In recognition of the United Nations International Day against Drug Abuse, the contest anchored the theme: " Our life, our community, no place for drugs."

Over 500 students from 14 various schools participated in the said event as they expressed their call for a drug-free society in the future.

During the awarding ceremonies held on June 26 at the Indian Cultural Centerauditorium, UN representative on Drugs and Crime, Carl Marsh, lauded the young talents and their parents for their participation.

" I am so thoroughly impressed by the profound, moving speeches of these young people." Marsh stated in his speech as he thanked the organization for building awareness to the youth the dangers of drug abuse.

The Anti Smoking Society of Qatar is now on its 6th year under the patronage of the National Health Authority of the State of Qatar.

PSD beats PIS in a Rematch Basketball game

Posted on Monday the 18th of February 2008

Last September 14, 2007 a game was held in Qatar Sports Club at about 11:00 am, the PSD team comprising of 4th year, 3rd year and a 1st year student versus the PIS team. It was a good fight between the two especially because it was a rematch.

The PIS team won the first game which really challenged the PSD team to improve their game. The game was really exciting and thrilling. You couldn’t really predict who would win. The PIS team led in the 1st quarter but in just a matter of points on PSD. The game went on like this but when it reached the 3rd quarter they were already on a tie, you couldn’t afford to just close your eyes or else you’ll miss a moment in the game. The audience couldn’t help but shout and cheer for the team especially people who supported them like some of the 4th year students. Their coach really guided them, planned for different tactics and defense they ccould use inside the court.

Alas, job well done, scoring 40-47 they got it! They won over the PIS team. Everybody really gave their best in playing. The game was centered to Noel Lavalle who was the highest pointer though everybody shared their part by playing well and by winning over the game.

As I interviewed their coach on how he felt, he just proudly said “NANALO KAMI!” with a big smile in his face. You could see the players’ faces, how happy they were after the game. Comments arised and teasing each other were the things you could hear inside the bus going back to PSD campus. Their coach treated them for a job well done. Every hard work during the training and during the play received a good pay. Now everybody still waits for the next round as to who would win over the game of 1 is to 1.

The LINK: not your ordinary newspaper

Posted on Tuesday the 19th of February 2008

A fresh start means fresh ideas and fresh ideas means changes. And when it comes to changes, we, the LINKERS will not lag behind.

The LINK, the official student publication of the Philippine School Doha has undergone a major transformation. Compared to its other issues, the newspaper now boasts a new logo with a color scheme of black and green. The logo and color scheme is an idea done by the newspaper’s new staff.

This idea is a way for the school newspaper to have its own identity and for the students to be interested in reading the newspaper so as to forge interest in school affairs and concerns.

Mr. Randy Nilles, an English I and II teacher is the new adviser for the LINK. He is a new teacher who was a former adviser of his school’s magazine, BOSCONIAN ODYSSEY.

Aside from a new adviser, we also have a new set of competent staff headed by our responsible Editor-in-chief, Klervin John B. Collado.

There are also new sections in the link entitled “Confessions, Expressions, Echoes, Photojourns, and a lot more. Through these, we hope to hear your voices regarding matters that you, our fellow PSDians, are concerned of. You can also shout-out to your friends or to your special someone and let them know your message.

This year’s issue of the LINK is bound to make a lasting impression. We would strive to do better each issue for the interest of our fellow PSDians. If you have comments or suggestions, feel free to approach any of the LINK staff.

Buwan Ng Wika

Posted on Monday the 18th of February 2008

“Children, tomorrow bring your Filipiñana attire”, that’s the familiar line of the teachers to the elementary students from Grade 1 to Grade 6. Yes, every August, there will be a date where all of them are obliged to wear Filipiñana. Even teachers and the whole staff of PSD are also obliged. Well that is just a part of celebrating a very special occasion, to be particular, The Buwan Ng Wika.

In the attempt to unite our people through understanding each other by means of having a national language, President Manuel L. Quezon paved the way on to having it legal. From then on, Filipino became our national language. Of course we need a language common to all of us so that we would understand one another. But language has more to say than it may seem. Through this word, we express our love, our variant emotions and feelings, our insights, the products of our mind, and many more. All of them we could express and show, through this one word.

Every year, most of us if not all, are excited when this month arrives. Competitions, like debates, poem recital, etc., are held during thus making the students, occupied. There were so many contests that took place to celebrate it just like the interpretation of the song “Bayan Ko”, of the Grade 6 students and a Filipino poem-recital of the Grade 5 students. Those were just some of the contests that happened in the intermediate level. In addition to this, the girl students wore colorful “Filipiñanas” while the boys wore “Barong Tagalog” and so did the teachers. After the contest the students went back to their respective classrooms for the preparation of their presentation for class program during the Card Giving Day. The winner in the contest of the “interpretation of song” was the one who presented in the culminating program for the “Buwan ng Wika”.

Through those activities, we can really show that even though we are far away from our native land, we still can really be a are part of celebrating and commemorating the Buwan Ng Wika.

BOT hails its new members

When they give these papers involving some of the school affairs, we could see the signature of the BOT Chairman right below the main letter. And every year we could see different names on it. Now that the school has started its new year, we also have new board of trustees. We have Edgar V. Bondoc, as the Chairman, Joseph B. Dosado for the position of Vice -Chairman, Maria Vinah C. Delgado as the Secretary/Teacher Representive, Gerardo

P. Macasa Jr. for the Treasurer, Fidel M. Escurel as the Auditor, Maribeth L. Salang M.D. as the Parent Representative, and Benifredo C. Patron and Ruby Socorro D. Santander as the Community Representatives. We also have Consul General Rosario P. Lemque as our Philippine Embassy Representative and Alexander S. Acosta, our School Principal.

A New Batch of teachers sets foot at PSD

Posted on Monday the 18th of February 2008

“Ok, class, I’ll be your substitute teacher until the new teacher arrives”, that’s a very common tag line of the old teachers substituting a subject at the beginning of the year. But, wait no longer, for the new batch has arrived.

Apparently this batch of teachers has really exerted much impression on the students. The students have their own reactions and comments on the new teachers (which commonly happens every year) regarding on their appearance, personality and the way they teach.

Starting from the High School Department we have, Mr. Jonald F. Ramas - TLE Teacher, Mr. Randy Niles - English, Eva Rocca -Filipino, Karren Cañete - Geometry, Rheabeth Tresvalles - Music & Dannilo Alcordo - Computer. From the Elemenatry Department, Primary Level, we have Anajane T. Llamado - Reading I, Joy S. Secuya -Science III, & Joan C Abastillas - Reading II. For The Intermediate Level we have Randy Pepito - Math, Nival Ostan - Science and Jiezevell Von Guese - English.

It really is common thing for us PSDians to meet new faces every year, and one of those faces is the faces of our new teachers. Although they are new, they will always somehow find a way to fit in to the growing family of PSD.

15th foundation day of Philippine School Doha deemed a success

Posted on Monday the 18th of February 2008

The 15th foundation day of the Philippine School Doha, having its theme “Crossing Barriers, Building Frontiers”, was celebrated last October 5, 2007 at 6:00 pm. Special guests, parents, students and the school staffs were there to witness and celebrate the success of the past 14 years of PSD and of the years to come.

The program started with the entrance of colors held by the CAT officers which was followed by the interdenominational prayers. It was followed by the opening remarks of the school’s principal; Mr. Alexander S. Acosta. The program was lightened with memories as the short video about the past 14 years of PSD was played. It showed the development as the presentation started from the first years of the school until the present. The Student Supreme Government went around with boxes to collect donations from the crowd for Bantay Bata (an organization in the Philippines that helps the unfortunate and abused children). It was followed by the cake-cutting ceremony and the releasing of the balloons and birds.

The second part was the introduction of the Mr. and Ms. PSD Earth 2008. The students cheered for their favorite contestants as they presented a dance and uttered words that best described them. By the end, the judges and the viewers made an arduous decision as they made the top ten list of the candidates. Before the celebration ended, the “Pautakan” or “Battle of the Brains” was held. It was a competition not only for the students but also for their parents. The questions were all about the history of PSD.

Summing this event up, everyone did enjoy the celebration and it was a success.
